Lutheran Temppeliaukio Church (Temppeliaukion kirkko - "the Church in the rock") is located in Töölö, close to Helsinki city centre (map). The construction of the Church on Temple square (Temppeliaukio) was planned in the 30-ies. A competition was held, which was won by the project. S. Siren, but the building was prevented by the outbreak in 1939 of war. In 1961 the municipality came back to this issue, was held a new project competition, which was won by brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. Their concept was to preserve the pristine landscape of the area, so they offered to cut the Church in the rock. However, the architects had to reduce the internal dimensions of the Church about the fourth part due to lack of funds. Construction began in February 1968 and the Church was built and consecrated in September 1969.

The Dome-ceiling of the Church is a 20 kilometers of copper wire laid in a spiral. The slab rests on a large number of thin pillars, allowing to penetrate into the room a sufficient amount of light.

The Church walls are of rough rock surface. The initial project called for the walls, but conductor Paavo Berglund and the acoustician Mauri Parle offered to leave the stone walls in their natural form. Rocks create irregularities in the hall, amazing acoustics, so it often hosts concerts. On 29 June 2006 there was held the first Finnish metal mass, when hymns were sung to the accompaniment of heavy rock.

Unlike traditional churches, temppeliaukio Church there are no bells, and simulation of bell ringing made Taneli Kuusisto, is created by loudspeakers located on the outside wall of the building.
