Tortosa. Municipal Market (Mercat Municipal)

From Ferrocaril bridge you can see the eclectic building of the city market, located on the left Bank of the river Ebro.

Municipal market (Mercat Municipal map), one of the largest in Catalonia, was built in 1884-1887 at the site of the old riverbed. Completed the project and supervised the construction of the city architect Juan Abril (Joan Abril i Guanyabens).

market size 32 to 84 meters covered with an arched roof resting only on the walls of the building. Steel construction developed by engineer Juan Torras (Joan Torras i Guardiola).

Torres was called the "Catalan Eiffel". Arch really affect its ease, giving the impression of decorative elements and not structural design.

Next to front of market there is another interesting building is the former fish market (Mercat del Peix), built 1935 d ujle in the style of rationalism. The author of the project, Agustí Bartlett (Barlett Agustí Zaldivar). In 2008 the building was restored and it opened up restaurant Viena.
